The recent fall in gold prices exposes Sri Lanka’s banking industry to the risk of a rise in nonperforming loans (NPLs) in the pawning (or gold-backed) loans segment. That’s according to a report, titled ‘Gold’s losing lustre reveals the cracks in Sri Lanka’s pawning segment’ that Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services published yesterday.
“We expect defaults in pawning loans to increase over the next 12 months unless gold prices stabilise,” said Standard & Poor’s Credit Analyst Geeta Chugh.

Fonterra under fire over milk scare; more product recalls
(Reuters): Fonterra, the world’s largest dairy exporter, came under fire from the New Zealand Government, farmers and financial regulators for its handling of a food contamination scare that has triggered product recalls and spooked parents from China to Saudi Arabia.
The Government sent officials to Fonterra premises to ensure a clearer message and to regain international confidence after New Zealand’s biggest company was criticised for dragging its feet in saying it sold whey protein products that contained a bacteria that could cause botulism – a potentially fatal food poisoning.

Corruption on the rise in Sri Lanka: Police most corrupt institution
Global Corruption Barometer 2013 reveals
The Global Corruption Barometer (GCB) released by Transparency International on Tuesday contains findings that suggest that corruption is still perceived as a problem in Sri Lanka, with some 64% of Sri Lankan respondents claiming corruption was on the increase in the country in the past two years while only 18% thought it has decreased.
For the second time in running within three years, the general public in Sri Lanka rated Police as the most corrupt institution in the country. When taken as a whole, in South Asia, political parties have been perceived as the most corrupt institution.

Indicted Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom launched a new file-sharing website on Sunday, promising users amped-up privacy levels in a defiant move against the U.S. prosecutors who accuse him of facilitating massive online piracy.
The colorful entrepreneur unveiled the “Mega” site ahead of a lavish gala and press conference at his New Zealand mansion on Sunday night, the anniversary of his arrest on racketeering charges related to his now-shuttered Megaupload file-sharing site. Megaupload, which Dotcom started in 2005, was one of the most popular sites on the Web until U.S. prosecutors shut it down, accusing Dotcom and several company officials of facilitating millions of illegal downloads.

Tipping etiquette in America has become a minefield of awkward handshakes, rudimentary mathematics and social blunders. This week, New York’s Conflicts of Interest Board fined two sanitation workers $2,000 for accepting a tip. They were paid $10 between them for hauling off an unusually large amount of trash for a resident in Queens, N.Y., though they requested $20.
But while tipping sanitation workers is a no-no, a growing number of workers expect it and depend on it. Many consumers may be surprised to learn that they’re expected to tip baristas, for instance. (Consider it a goodwill tax for all that free Wi-Fi.) Just this week, New York’s Court of Appeals ruled that Starbucks (SBUX) baristas must share their tips with shift supervisors. The court found that the supervisors do much of the same work as baristas and are, therefore, entitled to a share.
