Sri Lanka EDEX exhibition to showcase career paths

Sri Lanka's EDEX 2013 exposition will showcase career and further education opportunities for school leavers with over 350 employers and educational institutes exhibiting, officials said.
The exhibition will be held from18 to 20 January in Colombo 25 to 26 January in Kandy. The exhibition will have over 200 foreign universities from 21 countries participating either directly or through local representatives, showcasing opportunities for globally competitive education opportunities, officials said.EDEX organizers say early awareness of career and tertiary educational opportunities and vocation education will allow young people to find employment quickly and match the needs of a growing economy.

"There is a time gap in getting contributing to the economy from our young," EDEX project chairman Kamal Abeysinge told journalists.

"Obviously that is a significant loss to the national economy. Therefore it is imperative to school leavers who do not get an opportunity for further tertiary education to consider vocational training as a viable and respectable option."

"This will help them to be better prepared for the employment opportunity that will become available in a growing Sri Lankan economy and making them valuable to themselves and to the society."

Abeysinghe said that the labour force participation rate among youth was 34 percent and youth unemployment was 19 percent.

EDEX organizers say that they are planning an annual exhibition in the middle of the year starting from 2013, which will further cut down the time taken by school leavers to choose their career or tertiary education paths.

This exhibition will focus on higher educational opportunities for the post Advanced Level examinations or Sri Lanka's state-mandated university entrance cum high school certificate examination student who will be just out from school.

"In January each year the exhibition capture the post Ordinary Level and the post A/L student population during the post examination recovery period when their in search of jobs and opportunities for their future," Manju Ariyarathne, secretary of the Royal College Union said.

"The midyear expo will give glimpse on higher education opportunities for post A/L students."

The mid-year exhibition will held on August 31 and September 01, in Colombo.
