Hate fees? Whether it’s your mortgage or a flight, here’s how to stop paying them…
I hate fees, they’re like taxes levied against you by the private sector. It’s especially galling when you have to pay a fee to apply for an ongoing service, like a mortgage – isn’t the provider making enough money without charging you for admin too?
And fees seem to be rising. New analysis from moneysupermarket.com shows that fees for fixed and tracker mortgages have risen by more than 20% since September 2009.
The price comparison site warned people not to be sucked in by low rates but to consider the whole cost. For example, the lowest two-year fixed rate mortgage is 2.64% from HSBC but it comes with £1,999 in fees.
Compared to that, the Bank of Ireland offers a higher two-year fixed rate at 2.78% but with a lower fee of £799. On a £150,000 mortgage, the higher rate works out at £943 cheaper over the two years once you factor in fees.
But it would be better to avoid fees altogether. So, starting with mortgages, how can you live a fee-free life?

How credit card cloning works
Fraudsters just spent £2,000 using my husband’s credit card. But the card was never stolen. How did they do it?
The amount lost to card fraud last year was a substantial £341 million. That’s £341 million stolen by fraudsters, when the rest of us have to work for a living.
Last week, I saw how this kind of fraud works first hand. My husband received a text from his bank asking if he really was buying £950-worth of stuff in Sports Direct.
Since he was at work (and isn’t exactly a fan of sports fashion), it was fairly obviously not him. But what confused us was that his card hadn’t been stolen; it was still in his wallet.
And we take card security very seriously. When paying in shops or restaurants, he knows not to let the credit card out of his sight and he certainly hadn’t used any disreputable website – the only recent purchases had been booking a holiday on a travel comparison site and paying for a book on Amazon.
So how did these fraudsters do it?
Are contactless cards vulnerable to theft?
Millions of us have them and millions more will be sent them soon - but how much more risky are contactless cards?
How much riskier are contactless credit cards really?
Ever since the banks and the financial services industry started rolling out contactless payment cards, and merchants adopted contactless payment terminals, a new security industry has grown warning us of the threat of having your card data read.
In fact, you've probably seen the articles or videos that claim that your new contactless payment card details can be read by an attacker while your card is in your pocket, perhaps closely followed by a sales pitch for some sort of foil sleeve which can prevent your card from being read.

10 dream jobs that aren't as glamorous as they look
Who wouldn't want to be a travel writer? They visit some of the most interesting and beautiful places in the world, and they get paid for it. Or a celebrity assistant? They get to hang out with celebrities!
The truth is that while these jobs certainly do come with great perks, even so-called "dream jobs" aren't perfect. Though all 10 of the following people love their careers and wouldn't change them for anything, there are times when, like the rest of us, they think work sucks.

Making the best of a job you hate
There's just no denying the signs. In fact you don't need any signs at all. You just can't stand your job. But how many of us have the luxury to just get up and leave a lousy job without having another lined up?
Having a job you hate is never an easy thing to deal with, but sometimes you just need to grin and bear it until you have another gig lined up. Whether you're currently stuck because you just have to pay the bills or are holding out for the next great opportunity, here are some ways to get through the day:
Do one thing each day to help you reach your goals.
You don't need to cross all your goals off your list every day, but you can chip away daily. When you get up in the morning, set a daily objective for yourself and make sure you achieve it. This will give you a sense of accomplishment and keep you feeling good about your progress.
